Renovation Personality Types: Find out which type you fit into

Restoring homes to a good state of repair is not for everyone. There’s a reason for that. It all comes down to a person’s attitude towards renovation projects which can be determined by three categories; where they decide to stay during the renovation, their budget and how much they enjoy DIY.

These three criteria combined have enabled us to determine the different renovation personality types most renovators fall into:

1. The Autonomist

The hands off renovator will be fairly passive in their renovation project. They will opt to give minimal direction to those involved and maximum freedom for decision making on their behalf. These renovators typically have a wealth of resources and limited time which prohibits them from being in the day to day of the project.

2. The Moderator

The moderator doesn’t live in the property and pays someone else to do the work entirely. They’re still updated in the day to day management and occasionally do site visits but wouldn’t be caught dead with a hammer or paint brush in their hand. They are only interested in timely updates from whomever they have delegated the management of the project. These renovators may be quite well off and connected, busy and possibly even have a family of their own to prioritise.

3. The Novice

They don’t typically live in the property but they are doing it themselves. This renovator probably has quite a bit of money and can afford to stay elsewhere or has a network to stay with. They are embarking on their first renovation project and want to understand the ins and outs or renovating a home. They also enjoy handy work and don’t mind getting themselves dirty, treating the project like they’re showing up for work each day.

4. The Economist

The Economist are the opposite to The Novice. This renovator lives in the property and but has outsourced the work to a third party. They want to economise the outputs of those doing the work and potentially maximise the money they are putting in. These types of renovators typically live frugally and save where they can.

5. The Labourer

The Labourer is akin to Jack from The Notebook. They live in the property and do all the restoration themselves. They’re almost a perfectionist and want to contribute to every aspect of the project. They have a clear vision for how they want the renovation to turn out and do not trust others to fulfil the goal. They’re also an expert in construction work, perhaps previously working as a builder.

6. The Discipliner

The final personality is The Discipliner. They live in the property and do the vast majority of the work themselves but unlike the labourer they are able to outsource odd jobs that they may not want to do to other tradesman. They remain disciplined in undertaking work at their own speed but know their limitations.
